  • Established 1980

Overview

Established in 1980, Aga Khan Foundation Canada promotes discussion and learning on global issues, raises funds and awareness, taps into Canadian expertise, and builds partnerships with Canadian institutions to support the Aga Khan Foundation’s global work. These efforts are undertaken in cooperation with the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada, civil society and private sector organisations, and individuals across the country.

Canadians can participate through various channels, including exhibitions, conferences, workshops – and through work, volunteer opportunities, and fundraising campaigns like World Partnership Walk and Golf.

Governance

Ensuring a cohesive strategic direction both nationally and globally, AKFC is governed by AKF’s global Board of Directors and a National Committee in Canada.

National Committee

The National Committee functions as the local operating Board in Canada. All National Committee members are Canadian and are appointed by the AKF Board of Directors. The Committee fulfils key governance and oversight responsibilities for AKFC, including:

  • Providing ongoing guidance and stewardship of AKFC
  • Ensuring compliance with Canadian legal and fiscal requirements
  • Overseeing the annual budget and ensuring resources placed under its custody are productively managed, invested and used in furtherance of the best interests of AKFC

The National Committee meets no less than three times a year. An Audit & Compliance Sub-Committee is appointed from among the members of the National Committee and meets at least twice a year.
