AKF is delighted to announce the signing of a new agreement with the Embassy of Denmark to enhance coastal communities’ resilience to climate change in Sindh province in southeast Pakistan.

The Sindh Coastal Resilience Integrated Programme will focus on addressing climate vulnerabilities in Sindh’s coastal districts and also creating economic opportunities for communities most affected by climate change.

Sindh’s diverse and fragile climate ranges from drought-prone interior districts, desert and hills to a 330-kilometre-long coastal stretch from the Indian border to Balochistan.

The varied impacts of climate change on this region – from droughts and heatwaves to severe flooding – have resulted in fragile socio-economic conditions and livelihoods. During the severe floods that hit Pakistan in 2022, Sindh was badly affected, leaving many families displaced and rural livelihoods destroyed.

This programme will directly respond to these challenges by implementing community-led, cost-effective, and locally relevant solutions that strengthen fragile ecosystems and livelihoods.

“Communities in Pakistan are already experiencing the severe impacts of climate change. This partnership with Denmark is a significant step toward ensuring climate resilience and environmental sustainability, while improving economic opportunities for those affected.”

The programme forms part of AKF’s Indian Ocean Coastal Regeneration Initiative; a 10-year, six country initiative addressing the converging crises of climate change, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss that threatens the earth’s capacity to recuperate and regenerate and the wellbeing and livelihoods of communities.

"With the varied impacts of climate change in Sindh – from droughts to flooding – this initiative is crucial in mitigating climate risks."

Ambassador Jakob Linulf – Denmark’s Ambassador to Pakistan

The agreement was signed by H.E. Jakob Linulf, Denmark’s Ambassador to Pakistan, and Akhtar Iqbal, CEO of AKF, Pakistan.

The Sindh Coastal Resilience Integrated Programme will be implemented in partnership with the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan and the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme.
