Uganda

Overview

The Aga Khan Foundation has operated in Uganda since 1992. In 1993, it established the early foundations of the Madrasa Early Childhood Programme in Kampala to respond to a request from local leaders for assistance in improving the overall level of educational achievement of their children.

In Uganda, Aga Khan Foundation leads a range of integrated, innovative and gender sensitive programmes across eight districts in Uganda’s central (Kampala) and northern (West Nile) regions.

Through a formal memorandum of understanding between Ugandan Ministry of Education and Sports and Aga Khan Development Network education agencies, over the past decade the Aga Khan Foundation has implemented a comprehensive school reform strategy (Education Improvement Program) focused on strengthening four interrelated components: teacher professional development; school leadership and governance; capacity of government systems and institutions; and parents and community engagement.
