Tajikistan

Overview

The Aga Khan Foundation has operated in Tajikistan since 1993 (Mountain Societies Development Support Programme since 1997 and Accelerate Prosperity in 2019), when it led a humanitarian response to acute food shortages in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast following the collapse of the Soviet Union and subsequent civil war.

The Aga Khan Foundation operates across all regions of Tajikistan, covering more than 60 districts and towns across the Districts of Republican Subordination, Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast, Khatlon and Sughd regions.

In addition, the Aga Khan Foundation often plays a convening, partnership development, policy dialogue and resource mobilisation role for the Aga Khan Development Network and its agencies in Tajikistan.

Aga Khan Foundation aligns its programmes with the Government of Tajikistan’s National Development Strategy. This includes emphasis on six key focus areas, as well as gender equality and social welfare. It also involves a focus on infrastructure, the provision and sustainable use of equipment, and the community management of assets.
